Kayaking & Cataloguing Trash Found in Avalon’s Back Bay

Trash. It’s a global problem. And it’s a local problem, here on Seven Mile Island. You’ve seen it on the beach, but you may not know it’s all over the back bays. Perhaps from ignorance, carelessness or a host of other reasons, including the ocean breeze we love so much, trash of all kinds ends up in the bay – we see it every day.

Some trash quickly sinks beneath the surface of the water and forever lines the bottom of our bays, suffocating the sea. What does not sink floats out with the changing tide, only to litter another area, and slowly degrade over time, to be consumed by fish, fowl, and ultimately, by us.

Two intrepid Avalon residents are talking trash, and doing something about it. Each day we kayak the back bay around the Cedar Island bird preserve, scouring the bay to pick up as much trash as we can.

Join us here and on Instagram as we post our daily trash finds, interesting oddities, and the occasional treasure. We will compile a tally of the things we find for the entire 2017 season.
